RESTORING EAGLES TO THE SKIES OF WALES
Eagle Reintroduction Wales (ERW) is exploring the feasibility of restoring Wales’ lost eagle species to the skies they once soared. While Welsh identity is often symbolised by leeks, daffodils and dragons, eagles are also a powerful part of our natural and cultural heritage.
Both the Golden Eagle (Eryr euraid) and the White-tailed Eagle (Eryr y môr) were once widespread across Wales and much of the UK, shaping ecosystems and inspiring people for centuries. Despite an abundance of suitable habitat, Wales has been without breeding eagles for over 150 years. Their disappearance represents a significant ecological and cultural loss.
Led by Welsh raptor conservationist Dr Sophie-Lee Williams, Eagle Reintroduction Wales is developing a robust, science-led evidence base to assess whether eagles can be safely and responsibly restored to modern Wales. The project brings together ecological research, feasibility studies, and stakeholder engagement to inform discussions with statutory conservation bodies and local communities.
ERW’s vision is to reconnect Wales with its natural heritage, restore our missing Welsh raptors while delivering benefits for biodiversity, education, and future generations.
