Eagle Reintroduction Wales (ERW) is a science-led conservation initiative dedicated to restoring Wales’ lost eagles. Founded in 2016, ERW explores the return of the White-tailed Eagle (Eryr y Môr) and Golden Eagle (Eryr Euraid) to Wales, bringing together science, conservation, communities and culture to help shape their future.

Our work is built around four core objectives: scientific research, developing the evidence and knowledge needed to inform eagle restoration and conservation; education and outreach, inspiring people to learn about, connect with and conserve eagles; heritage and culture, celebrating and strengthening the historic and cultural relationship between eagles, people and the Welsh landscape; and reintroduction and conservation, working towards the responsible restoration, long-term conservation and coexistence of eagles in Wales.

Our vision is to see eagles soaring over Welsh skies once again — restoring a missing part of our natural heritage, supporting healthy and resilient ecosystems, and inspiring future generations to value and protect Wales’ wildlife.

“Sophie-lee is a Welsh raptor ecologist and the founder and programme lead of Eagle Reintroduction Wales (ERW). Growing up in the Welsh Valleys, her early fascination with birds of prey was shaped by encounters with small raptors such as Peregrine Falcons and Kestrels. While working in Scotland in 2014, she experienced landscapes where Golden Eagles and White-tailed Eagles still thrive, highlighting their absence from Wales. In 2016 she established ERW, beginning a decade-long scientific and conservation journey to explore whether eagles could once again return to the Welsh landscape.”
